Project Description

Renovation of the residential building responds to the client’s brief to provide 40 linear meters of book storage for a two-storey end of terrace house and improve the energy efficiency of the house. The architect decided to work within the fabric of the existing building rather than create a new loft structure or extension, due to the modest budget.

The Challenge in Work

Partel consulted and worked with Arboreal Architecture to design a modern, sustainable building that improves air quality and enabling them to reduce energy costs. There was installed a state-of-the-art LUNOS ventilation system, which controls moisture and provides constant fresh air without heat loss thanks to heat recovery units.

Project Completion

To reduce costs and keep things eco, it would all be plywood, even the cladding for the cooker extractor. There is also a smart mechanical ventilation system that significantly impacts the indoor air/environmental quality of this home. “You pay truckloads for stuff you never see,” the homeowner observes. That’s true — but this house now has very low energy bills, smells fresh, and has controlled ventilation.

Project type: Low Energy Build
Location: East London, UK
Building: Single-Family house
Completion: 2018

The end result is an ingenious eco-home with a ‘treehouse’ loft library, super-bright, with clean and hygienic indoor air.
The project won the award for “Most Innovative” at the 2019 New London Architecture Don’t Move, Improve! Awards.
